Breeding weights

Jun 18 2008

This part was made for people who want to use an incubator and wish to tune it according to the weight of the eggs inside. During the breeding process an egg loses weight. When an egg has lost to much weight after a set period of time, it means that to much fluid is vaporized and that you'll have to increase the humidity in the incubator. If the egg is to heavy, you'll have to reduce the humidity. Regardless of what the humidity meter tells you.

How does it work? You fill in the breeding time for your birds. Next you fill in the starting weight of your eggs. You can enter the weight of up to 5 eggs (ABCDE). Next you fill in the starting date, this is the date on which you want to start the breeding process. Now you can press the calculate button and you'll see that for every day and for every egg a reference weight will appear.

You can print this page and put it next to the incubator. Every few days (3 to 5) you note the weight of the eggs so you can compare their real weight to the calculated weight. There is some room next to the printout to note the real weight of the eggs. Now you're either confident everything is ok, or you can make some adjustments: if the eggs are to light > increase the humidity; if they are to heavy > decrease the humidity.

Try to weigh the eggs at about the same time every day. Preferably the time that you put them into the incubator. When an egg deviates from the others, there's probably something wrong with it.

When making this table, we've started from an average percentage of weight loss according to the species we're working with most. This method also works for waterfowl and wading birds, probably for others too. Of course there are always things that could go wrong in the breeding process for which we cannot be held responsible. There could be birds which have a breeding process which deviates naturally from this table, but for most species this should work fine. The final responsibility lies with the user of this method, it is a part of the service we offer for free, and we've created this table by best possible means.
